The post

We wish to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working in the area of quantum computing and machine learning theory. The post is offered to work in the group of Dr. Oleksandr Kyriienko (Department of Physics, University of Exeter) and support the collaboration with an industrial partner. A successful applicant will join the project on developing quantum algorithms for solving nonlinear differential equations. The post will be hosted by the University of Exeter, Streatham campus.

The post will target the tasks of developing original quantum algorithms, aiming to advance the areas of multi-simulation, finances, and quantum machine learning. The duties will include:

  • theoretical investigation of quantum protocols, including resource estimate analysis and deriving analytical bounds on performance;
  • in silico testing of algorithms, developing efficient software realizations, and quantum hardware testing for prototype problems;
  • applying algorithms for relevant applications, and proposing novel use-cases;
  • regular interaction with the industrial partner and collaborators, as well as mentoring junior team members;
  • reporting results in the form of peer-reviewed publications (where applicable) or internal reports, and contributing to patent applications.

About you

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to perform calculations (analytical, numerical) in the areas of quantum information and theoretical machine learning. The areas of technical expertise include backgrounds in quantum information, AI, operator algebra, tensor networks, probability theory, and complexity theory.

The successful applicant will have excellent writing skills, professional attitude, desire to self-study, and will be goal-oriented. They shall show the ability to work in virtual environment and possess a self-discipline for doing research remotely if required. Importantly, the successful applicant will be industry-inclined, and potentially willing to join the rapidly developing quantum start-up community.
