We have an exciting opportunity to join the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) as a Research Engineer for Digital Systems Integration for the Nuclear AMRC.

As a Research Engineer for Digital Systems Integration based at our new Nuclear AMRC – Midlands Facility in Derby, your role is to work within the Digital Environment team. Digital Environments is a new theme for the Nuclear AMRC, which represents significant cross-sector research and development opportunities to enhance the nuclear supply chain’s competitive position.

You will work closely with the Technical Leads, Researchers and experienced Engineers to deliver research projects. The projects will be broadly focused on digital manufacturing and engineering design using the latest advanced manufacturing technologies to improve quality, capability and robustness during manufacture, reducing the cost of production, delivering increased performance and productivity. You will be involved in projects that range from research for new product development and introduction, through to controls and instrumentation, automation and verification, to develop and demonstrate robust and world-leading methods of manufacture.

You will have:

  • Have a good degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent industrial experience).
  • A strong research interest with hands-on experience in control and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including product design for production, fabrication, assembly, tooling and materials.
  • Excellent IT skills, including the ability to use specialist software packages, e.g. computer aided design, Matlab, Finite-Element Software, ability to write code/ macros and to manage computer operating systems and hardware. In addition to excellent office software proficiency e.g. Microsoft Office suite.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including report writing skills and experience of delivering presentations.

The role will be suitable for an engineer wanting to develop their digital advanced manufacturing knowledge and skills using the very latest software and hardware to solve exciting industrial problems. You will be positioned within an important team at the heart of the Nuclear AMRC’s strategy for regional growth, providing a critical service to local companies and a significant contribution to the continuing improvement of the Centre & our future capabilities.

This role is also subject to a satisfactory Basic Personnel Security Standard Check (BPSS).
