Description

A wide variety of systems (in domains such as critical infrastructure, agriculture, and others) are either currently or are expected to incorporate resource-constrained devices in order to deliver their functionality. These may be in the form of stationary or mobile autonomous sensor and actuator IoT devices. Due to the required pervasiveness, it is important to ensure that these resource-constrained devices do not pose a security or privacy threat to the system. However, providing security or privacy guarantees is complicated due to the limited resources these devices possess.

For this PhD position, we seek candidates interested in developing novel theoretical foundations in the security or privacy of resource-constrained Internet of Things systems and the application of these foundations to practical scenarios. We are interested in the development and analysis of new and existing protocols and platforms, planning autonomous actions while taking the action’s impact on the privacy or security of the system into account, and techniques to implement multiple secure applications for these devices.

The appointed candidate will reside in the Systems Security Group (SSG) and will interact closely with the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems Node in Security (TAS-S) project. Dr Matthew Bradbury and Professor Neeraj Suri will co-supervise, please contact Matthew with informal enquiries. Due to restrictions on the post we are only able to accept applicants with an existing right to work in the UK.
