An exciting opportunity has arisen for candidates to develop novel Design Software which will address the challenge of designing burner systems with reduced emissions and more complex fuel blends. The new Design Software needs to be capable of modelling fuel emissions and complex fuel behaviours to enable Lanemark to deliver optimised designs for its burner systems, which will both meet future stringent regulations on emissions and be capable of burning complex fuel blends without increasing emissions.

This 30-month project takes the form of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) (, which provides you with practical and formal training and the availability of support from experienced mentors from Lanemark Combustion Engineering Limited (Lanemark), Aston University and Innovate UK. Key skills/ experience required include:

  • A minimum 2:1 B.Sc / B.Eng and a M.Sc / M.Eng in Design / Mechanical Engineering.
  • Industrial experience in a product design role.
  • Excellent mechanical engineering design skills, with a methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and ability to present and defend ideas to groups at all levels in the business and to all project stakeholders
  • Good skills and knowledge in the heat transfer and thermodynamics subject area.
  • Experience or capability in Numerical / mathematical modelling of systems, particularly in the used of MATLAB Software engineering and computer programming, particularly in the used of high level languages such as JAVA / Python.
  • Highly motivated and proactive individual, who has the confidence to own and drive the project, monitor progress, co-ordinate work streams and manage the project timescales and budget effectively.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders in a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Strong organisational skills to take project ownership, co-ordinate work-streams and achieve agreed objectives.
  • Work independently on own initiative as and when required.
  • Credibility to ask questions and constructively challenge.

The Company:

Lanemark Combustion Engineering Limited (Lanemark), currently designs, manufactures and supplies gas fired process heating burners and ancillary systems (e.g., fans, ducting, tubular heat exchangers etc), used in manufacturing and petrochemical facilities. These systems have been developed to meet specific client needs based on Lanemark's comprehensive understanding of gas as an energy source combined with a detailed awareness of industry needs and of both local and international regulations, particularly environmental compliance. You will work in a project team with Dr Muhammad Imran and Dr Michal Konecny at Aston University and the Senior Management Team at Lanemark Combustion Engineering Limited Ltd with the support of the IUK’s Knowledge Transfer Adviser.   


You will be based predominantly at Lanemark but will also have access to facilities at Aston University in central Birmingham. Some travel to key clients may also be required.
