Head of Division: Media, Communication and Performing Arts

The Division of Media, Communication and Performing Arts (MCPA) is seeking to appoint a Head of Division to lead and develop a large and diverse academic team.

The Head of Division (HoD) will provide overall operational leadership to MCPA, managing and coordinating all aspects of the implementation of the School operational plan in relation to the Division. They will also contribute to the teaching and learning activities of the Division and undertake research, scholarship or commercialisation activity as appropriate. The Head of Division should identify with the ethos and values of the Division and have a creative and collaborative approach to strengthening and operationalising these.

The role

The Division of Media, Communication and Performing Arts offers a suite of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in areas such as Drama, Strategic Communications, Film and Media, Arts Management, Costume Design, Acting, and Digital Content Creation. Each year there are in the region of 780 students being taught by a team of 30 academics and 3 technicians. The Division also hosts the Centre for Communication, Cultural and Media Studies and in 2014 our submission to REF in this unit of assessment was ranked 1st in Scotland for world leading and internationally excellent publications and 12th in the UK on the same measures. The centre has recently submitted to REF 2021 and the HoD would be expected to build on the outcome of this submission.

About you

The post holder will be an established academic with a background in one of the disciplines taught within the Division. They will have professional credibility and an existing reputation for leading and motivating teams. They will have a broad-based career to date, with experience of teaching, research or scholarship, academic administration, and line management. They will have the ability to provide creative leadership and to manage large teams of academic staff, drawing on skills in communication, team building, motivation, coaching, managing change, planning, problem solving and organisation.

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and manage teaching, staffing, and budgets for a large and diverse team.
  • In addition, the role holder will have previous experience of teaching and research/scholarship in a relevant discipline, and a solid knowledge and understanding of quality enhancement procedures.
  • Active participation in and experience of working across School and institutional committees is required as the post holder will be required to engage with both the School/Divisional committees and those of our external partnerships.
  • The post holder will be an effective and motivational communicator and will have the ability to gain the commitment of others within the Division across a range of learning and teaching issues.
  • The appointee will also be a strong coach who is able to provide supportive guidance to academic staff at a range of career stages. They will have the knowledge, passion, and drive to enhance and develop current and new systems and practices in a manner than enhances the student and staff experience while building on our reputation for innovative teaching and learning that supports civic society and social justice.
