About the team/job
An exciting opportunity has been created for a talented scientific software engineer to work on the development of the ChEBI database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/chebi/), which contains detailed information on small molecule compounds in biology. ChEBI is a very widely used resource, with a growing user base numbered in the hundreds of thousands and with millions of accesses every year. In addition, ChEBI provides molecular data to many of the key global biological databases upon which researchers in the biosciences are increasingly reliant. We recently received funding from the BBSRC to rewrite and improve the software and data infrastructure of ChEBI so that it can continue to fulfil this critical role in the future. This "new ChEBI" will be developed using modern software technologies, making it easier to support, and will be more flexible, efficient and sustainable. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work on a significant and widely-used software resource.
The successful candidate will be based in the Chemical Biology Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and will closely with other members of the team, together with other groups at EMBL-EBI and collaborators as required. S/he will be responsible for the implementation of a new database schema and its data import and integration pipelines, a new searching infrastructure, a facility to enable users to submit new entries in bulk and visualisation of the ChEBI ontology which is a unique feature of the database. In addition to having relevant software engineering and programming skills you will need to have excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and be able to interact not only with other software engineers but also with ChEBI’s many users.
