The School of Archaeology and Linacre College are seeking applications for the Edward Hall Professorship of Archaeological Science.

The Professorship of Archaeological Science was established in 1988 following the retirement of Professor Edward Hall, the first director of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art (RLAHA). A major unit within the School of Archaeology, RLAHA has been in operation since 1955, and was initially the brainchild of the late Professor C.F.C. Hawkes and the late Viscount Cherwell, who saw the need to develop scientific techniques to address humanistic questions. The current holder of the Edward Hall chair, Professor Mark Pollard, retires in 2022. The University seeks a replacement to carry forward transformative, innovative research in archaeological science.

You will have an outstanding research record in archaeological science, and the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths in maintaining and developing a leading research presence. There is a requirement to also contribute to teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and a strong commitment to recruitment, training and mentoring of the next generation of archaeological scientists.

If you would like to discuss this post, please contact Professor Amy Bogaard, Head of the School of Archaeology (amy.bogaard@arch.ox.ac.uk).

All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

All applications must be received by 12.00 noon on Friday 12 November 2021. Interviews are scheduled for Thursday 27 January 2022.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
