A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Joon Lee in the Department of Chemical Engineering at POSTECH in Korea. The Lee group focuses on understating the molecular basis of biomolecules and the development of chemical materials using cellular components in vitro.
Specifically, based on the ‘Design-Build-Test-Analyze’ engineering approach more recently applied to synthetic biology, the primary research goals of the Lee group are directed toward the synthesis of non-canonical entities that can be assembled into novel biopolymers and repurposing of the biomolecules that enable the polymerization beyond the natural limits of 20 amino acids. The major areas of interest of the Lee group are: (1) to expand the range of non-canonical monomers that are accepted and polymerized by the ribosome (Lee et al. Nature Communications (2019), (2) to evolve new ribosomes that translates the monomers into a polymer (Lee et al. Nature Communications (2020), (3) and to develop novel in vitro platforms that better recapitulate the cellular environment for the synthesis of macrocyclic molecules effective to inhibit protein function. Qualified applicants should have Ph.D. (currently or by December 2022) with expertise in organic chemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or computational biology. The applicant should be fluent in English and have a strong history of scientific publication(s). Also, the applicant should have excellent troubleshooting and organizational skills and oral communication skills.
