Manchester Met is one of the UK’s largest universities, with over 34,000 students located in the heart of one of Europe’s most diverse and vibrant cities. With shared traditions of industry, innovation and inclusivity, alongside a passion for the arts, Manchester Met is very much a reflection of the community in which it is based.
Manchester School of Art was established in 1838 in response to the Industrial Revolution and the need to provide design education to support the booming manufacturing industry. Almost 200 years later, its mission lies clearly on developing graduates with the creative, technical and entrepreneurial skills needed to change the world. It remains at the forefront of research-led art and design education, driven by experimentation and collaboration across disciplines.
The Department of Art and Performance is part of the Manchester School of Art - the second oldest art school in the UK. Strongly connected to key creative and cultural stakeholders in Manchester, its extensive heritage has enabled it to become one of the leading providers of art and performance education nationally. Its ambition is to be internationally recognised for delivering studio and non-studio-based learning and high impactful research to develop the future generations of artists and performers. It is a place for highly motivated and critically thinking artists and performers and its ultimate goal is to enhance the aesthetic and social lives of the future.
As Head of Department, you will be an accomplished leader who possesses an acute understanding of the future of creative education in fine art and performance with in-depth experience of achieving excellence in both teaching and research. Working collaboratively as a member of the Faculty Leadership Team, you will lead an ambitious agenda and ensure that real academic excellence is provided, forging new partnerships, driving innovation and continuing to extend the department’s reach internationally.
This high-profile appointment will require an individual who will embrace this ethos to drive the department forward onto the next stage of its journey. The role is an opportunity for an ambitious, driven and collaborative leader to play a prominent part in a faculty and university with equal ambition, drive and reputation.
