We are seeking a candidate a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant with experience in Natural Language Processing of Social Media and crowd-sourcing, to join a project headed by Professors Janet Pierrehumbert and Xiaowen Dong. This is a fixed-term position until 30 September 2023 with a possibility of an extension subject to availability of funding.
The goal of the project is to develop novel NLP and network-based machine learning algorithms to diagnose and predict social fragmentation in on-line discussion groups, such as Reddit. You will be required to carry out computational analysis of posts and use the results to design crowdsourcing experiments on how different expressions are produced and understood in context. A particular focus is scalar expressions (such as “perfectly competent”, “nearly acceptable”, “all too likeable”). You will play a central role in delivering a large normed database to support future research in this area. You will also write reports on your research and publish these as papers in leading conferences and journals.
You should possess a doctorate or be near completion of a doctorate in a relevant field, (such as computational linguistics, computer science, data science, or psycholinguistics.) You should have good programming skills, with the ability to apply and evaluate the results of NLP algorithms. You should experience of collecting data from human participants, whether on-line or in a laboratory setting.
