The role

The University of Bristol is seeking a Research Associate with a background in ultrasound to develop and apply new ultrasound-based biotechnologies for brain organoid engineering. This project is one part of a broad, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research programme led by Dr James Armstrong, who is leveraging recent innovations in bioengineering to advance the state-of-the-art in stem-cell-derived organoid modelling. As the Research Associate you will be a key member of a vibrant new research group with a diversity of expertise across disciplines, such as ultrasonic manipulation, biomaterial engineering, pluripotent stem cell culture, organoid culture, tissue engineering, bioimaging, and neuroscience.

What will you be doing?

  • Design, model, build, and apply ultrasound instrumentation for brain organoid assembly.
  • Employ state-of-the-art characterization tools to analyze acoustic fields and organoids.
  • Analyze, interpret, and troubleshoot both computational and empirical datasets.
  • Aid research group and technicians in managing the laboratory space and facilities.
  • Contribute positively to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the research group.
  • Contribute positively to mental health and wellbeing within the research group.
  • Teaching and supporting junior scientists in the laboratory.
  • Co-supervision of BSc and MSc student projects.

You should apply if

  • You have experience in practical acoustics research (ideally ultrasonic manipulation).
  • You have experience in empirical data collection, data analysis and troubleshooting.
  • You have enthusiasm for applying ultrasound for translational biological research.
  • You have A PhD in a relevant field.
  • You are capable of contributing to a collaborative research environment in a manner that adheres to the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion
  • You are capable of effectively communicating complex scientific ideas across different academic disciplines, in a range of scenarios
  • Capable of identifying, defining, and solving complex scientific problems, and determining suitable courses of action

Additional information

Contract type: Open ended with funding for 2 years, potentially extendable to October 2025

Shift pattern: 35 hours per week
