Keele University has international reach, a reputation for world-class research, high quality research-led education and an outstanding student experience, reflected in a Gold award in the TEF. Keele has consistently ranked within the top three universities in England for overall student satisfaction in the NSS. The University has invested heavily over the past 10 years in its campus and infrastructure. It is large enough to have high impact and profile, but small enough to sustain its commitment to community and individuals. The University is now seeking to appoint an inspirational leader as Head of School of Life Sciences.
The School of Life Sciences is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching, and has seen strong recruitment to all its programmes in recent years. The new Head will lead a school with circa 40 academic staff, and nearly 1000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and will manage a budget of over £12m. The new Head of School will be central in enhancing the School’s research ambitions and profile, while further developing learning and teaching. They will lead through a period of planned expansion of the School’s teaching and research provision. The School of Life Sciences has a close association with Keele’s highly ranked Medical School and with the newly established Harper and Keele Veterinary School. The appointee will be a key member of the leadership team of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The successful candidate will bring a strong personal research background in a relevant discipline, as well as experience of leadership and management in an academic environment and the ability to motivate and inspire staff. Candidates will demonstrate excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, and will know how to sustain and further develop a strong team culture. Candidates will be outstanding research leaders, equally committed to teaching and students, and will lead the School to further develop a visible and distinctive identity, balancing the needs of teaching and research. This is an opportunity to lead and grow a high-performing school and shape its strategic direction.
