The Post

The focus of this role is on working with students in individual tutorials, delivering academic skills workshops and managing our online resources. There will also be an opportunity to teach on our Access Learning Strategies modules. Experience of working with diverse cohorts of students is essential, and applicants will need to be confident in supporting the development of generic academic skills across SCQF levels 6-11 and will be able to adapt this to different disciplines. You will have an excellent understanding of learning characteristics, the challenges students face when transitioning into, and through university, and accessibility issues. The work can often be complex, and students can be distressed, so a calm and systematic approach to working is vital. This role requires strong inter-personal skills, a commitment to a student-centred approach and an ability to deliver academic skills development with sensitivity and care. In order to fully support students, you will need to develop an in-depth knowledge of support services throughout the university and nurture strong working relationships with colleagues in student support and faculties.

This role will be based on campus, but blended delivery and creating asynchronous online resources are key elements of SLS provision and so you must have recent technological skills to support these activities. You will be a core member of the SLS team and contribute to our routine activities which include service evaluation, reporting, publicity and representing SLS at induction events and open days.

Essential Criteria

  • UK undergraduate degree or UK HE teaching experience
  • Extensive experience supporting individual students with academic skills development in a UK HE
  • Able to deliver virtual tutorials and workshops and apply appropriate technologies to support and engage students
