Part of The Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, The School of Psychology was established in August 2021 in order to create a single subject school, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes accredited through the British Psychological Society. The Head of School will lead a team of researchers and clinicians teaching and researching as well working on external collaborations with industries partners, with particular focus on the postgraduate curriculum offer, and the CPD market, through income generation and commercialisation of the curriculum. The Head of School will also be part of the senior Faculty leadership team.

Head of School and Associate Dean Psychology Role and Responsibilities

  • To provide academic leadership ensuring the school delivers excellence in the full portfolio of academic activity.
  • To lead on the academic development and enhancement of the School’s offer and to create new demand and meet the requirements of the existing market.
  • To lead, manage and support School colleagues, including the school management team, by recruiting, developing, coaching, motivating and managing their performance and promotions.
  • Provide leadership and management in order to develop and deliver the University’s vision and strategic plan at School level, overseeing its translation into policies and operational plans and ensuring their implementation in line with our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Manage the School’s non-pay budget, costs of teaching and income generation to enable the School to make required input into the Faculty’s target financial contribution.
  • Have oversight of and be responsible for the academic and professional programmes delivered by the School, ensuring an excellent student experience, effective partnership working with the School’s students and the embedding of the Inclusive Curriculum Framework and achievement of the School’s APP targets.
  • Build the depth and quality of the academic disciplines within the School in line with the University’s Strategic Plan 2030; building the standing and reputation of the School regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Foster a culture of belonging through demonstrating a commitment to equality, diversity, fairness and equity across the University for staff and students

Head of School and Associate Dean Psychology Requirements

  • Commitment to fairness, inclusivity and the promotion of equality and diversity
  • Master’s degree and preferably a PhD in one of the School discipline areas (or equivalent professional experience/expertise)
  • A recognised teaching qualification
  • Significant evidence of successful leadership in Higher Education
  • Have a strong academic record and standing in one of the disciplines within the School including successful recent experience of teaching/assessing and/or external examining.
  • Experience in seeking and obtaining accreditation of courses with relevant Professional Bodies.
  • Clear evidence of positive leadership and management performance
  • Skills and experience in managing change and a willingness to focus on culture change
  • Experience and evidence of leading and developing initiatives to improve the student experience including student employability issues and developments
  • Experience and evidence of developing productive partnerships to support development of a sustainable academic portfolio.
  • Publication record in peer reviewed academic journals.
