About the role

We are looking for a talented individual with a passion for social research to deliver and develop our work in Scotland as part of the team at the Scottish Centre for Social Research (ScotCen).  We have Senior Researcher roles available which will primarily cover our portfolio of Scottish qualitative and mixed method research projects.  These include projects which are at the heart of evidence-based policy making in Scotland across a range of subject areas including health, welfare, social justice, and children, young people and families.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading in all aspects of project delivery including sampling, topic guide development, fieldwork, analysis and reporting. Communicating effectively and professionally with colleagues, clients and external collaborators
  • Planning work and supervising more junior staff.
  • Working with colleagues to develop new business including contributing, and leading on aspects of, writing tenders and grant applications.

The Candidate:

The successful candidate will:

  • have a proven track record of managing and delivering high-quality qualitative and mixed method research studies, helping to ensure their delivery to time and budget;
  • have strong qualitative research skills and experience of conducting fieldwork and analysing the resulting data;
  • be passionate about social research, have a basic understanding of survey methods and an interest in research design and methodology across qualitative and quantitative disciplines
  • have strong project management skills and be able to work well under pressure and to manage deadlines effectively;
  • be a good communicator and work well as part of a team;
  • Have a track record of building positive relationships with customers, funders, and/or partners.

Knowledge and understanding of one or more of the following key substantive/policy themes would be an advantage: public health, social justice and children and families.

While we expect post-holders to have greater experience of qualitative methods, a basic understanding of survey methods is essential.  There is an opportunity to work on projects across both disciplines. This is a full-time position, but we are open to part-time and flexible working proposals.
