Intro to LIS: A university to tackle real world problems

  • Today’s problems are more interconnected, complex and urgent than ever before. This is a time for fresh thinking on how we address these problems and equip students/graduates with the knowledge and methods to tackle them

The role: Assistant/Associate Professor in Materials/ Materials Science

  • You will be an early joiner of our founding faculty of 10 academics and practitioners, building a world-class university for interdisciplinary study
  • This is a unique opportunity to shape the curriculum and institutional thinking on Materials and Materials Science and their applications in an interdisciplinary context
  • There is potential to build and establish an LIS lab for Materials Science/making of material products
  • We are open to enquiries from people with unusual hybrid combinations of expertise and creative ideas for teaching Materials/Material Science


You should be:

  • highly focussed on teaching/learning – with ambition to create the best interdisciplinary learning possible, for our undergraduates, new master’s programmes and professional learners;
  • interested to work on a real-world, problem-based curriculum with external partners;
  • experienced in working effectively in teams;
  • interested to challenge yourself and to model this is a co-learner with students;
  • Interested to take on a variety of administrative and extra-academic roles in a new university, such as student outreach and recruitment, pastoral support etc;

You should have:

  • a PhD in a relevant area, although proven expertise, e.g. in industry or government, would also be of interest;
  • experience of working in an interdisciplinary context; 
  • proven teaching experience in the relevant areas - but we are also open to considering new talent who can convince us through the extended interview process that they are the right person;
  • experience of managing complex administration and multiple deadlines.


The Package

  • LIS is committed to diversity, equality and inclusion in the hiring of its staff, and in all aspects of staff training, remuneration, development and performance management
  • We are looking for the successful applicants to join our curriculum development and teaching team from January 2022, or as soon as feasible thereafter
  • These positions are for permanent contracts. We are happy to consider some flexible working arrangements
  • Holidays are typically 25 days per year (pro rata)
  • Salaries will be directly comparable to the wider university sector and may depend on experience

Approach to research

  • We are building an academic community on interdisciplinary principles and we are therefore open to ideas regarding your research
  • LIS is dedicated to outstanding teaching but we recognize and promote the importance of research in higher education. Generous research time is therefore allocated to staff


  • Our campus is at 20-30 Whitechapel Rd, London, E1.
  • You will need to live at a commutable distance to central London. We regret that we cannot offer relocation packages.
