Our PhD programme is a platform to launch the careers of our future leaders in health data science. We are seeking ambitious researchers who wish to develop within the context of our national institute and to shape our response to the most complex health challenges through data-driven research. The programme is a collaboration between Health Data Research UK, The Alan Turing Institute and seven partner universities.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for students who want to develop their skills as health data scientists and make a real difference to health and care. There will be eight places available for our 2022/3 cohort.

Applications are open from people who meet criteria including holding:

  • A UK bachelor’s degree of at least an upper second class (2.1) in statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics or an allied discipline.
  • A bachelor’s degree of any outcome/discipline and can demonstrate their suitability through additional qualifications or experience in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics or an allied discipline (such as a master’s degree or research experience).

What can we offer?

Home University

All studentships are taken in partnership with one of our partner universities where the student will be registered. Students will have access to graduate-level courses and research project rotation within their university to introduce them to a variety of health data science areas and to enable them to develop their own bespoke PhD research project under the guidance of our expert university leads.

Year 1: Foundation Year

The Foundation Year combines the best in university-based training with HDR UK-led national activities to enable students to design their own three-year research project. The foundation year will include:

  • Residential 3-5 day immersion events
  • Workshops
  • Researcher Development
  • Selection of a research project

Year 2-4 Research Project

At the end of Year 1, students will design a bespoke research project and a multi-disciplinary supervision team based on their training experiences to be conducted in years 2-4. Alongside their research project, students in years 2-4 will also participate in our flagship Leadership Programme.

The programme offers:

  • Tax-free stipends (indicative Year 1 rates of £19,919 for those outside London and £22,278 for those in London with increases each year).
  • PhD registration fees at the UK student rate (and college fees where required)
  • Research expenses and travel costs
  • Training support and help to transition to the next step of your career at the end of the PhD
