Fully funded PhD Projects Addressing the Most Exciting and Important Questions in Environmental Science

The University of Edinburgh - School of GeoSciences

The Edinburgh Earth, Ecology and Environment (E4) Doctoral Training Partnership (, led by the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh, brings together 33 partners from the research, education, policy and industry sectors. The E4 DTP aims to deliver an outstanding programme of PhD training that sits alongside a broad range of multidisciplinary research spanning the whole range of NERC remit.

We seek to recruit the brightest PhD students to address environmental challenges, providing flexible training in a multidisciplinary setting and supportive research environment.

We are committed to increasing the diversity of our applicant pool and recruited cohorts and as such encourage applications from students from diverse backgrounds and/or with protected characteristics. We have widening participation mechanisms in place to specifically support applications from students who are from an under-represented group and who wish to disclose that information within their application (please refer to our application process for further details

The E4 DTP aims to create and promote a safe, inclusive and supporting environment where all staff and students are treated fairly, equally and with dignity and respect so that they can develop to their full potential. We recognise, respect and value the differences that students, staff and partners bring to our doctoral training partnership. For more information on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Edinburgh, see
