About the Role
The School of Engineering and Materials Science has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on an EPSRC funded project “Molecular Manufacturing”. This project will be carried out under the guidance of Stoyan Smoukov, Head of the Active & Intelligent Materials Lab.
The aim of the project is to discover the molecular basis of novel phase transitions – from liquid or solid states to rotator phases – solid states with degrees of freedom. These have been implicated in the self-healing of biological systems and are the basis for the recently discovered phenomena of artificial morphogenesis from our lab. It also involves harnessing these transitions for applications – both within the framework of the project, as well longer term in a potential start-up that could be based on those technologies.
Candidates should hold (or be about to be awarded) a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in Chemistry, Physics, Colloidal Science, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. Hands-on experience with building and running instruments is essential. Experience of the following is desirable: crystallography, calorimetry (DSC), nanoparticle size measurements (DLS), surface tension and other liquid surface measurements, bulk and surface rheology.
About the School
This post is within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, a large School with 70-80 academics and a similar number of postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1000 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. These are supported by an administrative and technical staff team of 45. The staff and student body are international in make-up.
