Crime is a severe threat to society's well-being, affecting people's lives and the economy of cities. Though crime is linked to different socio-economic factors, it exhibits remarkable regularities regardless of cities' particularities. This project aims to uncover such regularities and understand how they can help predict crime, design safer cities, and understand the urbanisation process. 

This project looks at cities as evolving systems that exhibit global order built from local-level decisions; precisely, it recognises cities as complex adaptive systems. Because of that, this project involves building computational models that reproduce collective phenomena, which will uncover general underlying processes of criminal activity. More broadly speaking, this project will use approaches based on machine learning, information theory, agent-based modelling, mean-field theory, among others. 

Entry Requirements 

This studentship is open to UK and Irish nationals, who if successful in their application will receive a full studentship including payment of university tution fees at the home fees rate. 

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualifications) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related subject, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK. A relevant Master's degree and/or experience in computational or mathematical modelling would be an advantage. 

If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.0 in IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project.

Funding Details

The University of Exeter’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences is inviting applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.  For eligible students the studentship will cover Home tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £15,609 for 3.5 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study.
