Key responsibilities

Your work will consist of:

  • Original research in any area of Continental Philosophy;
  • Teaching courses in Continental Philosophy in our BA and MA programmes and in other Leiden University degree programmes as required, and supervision of BA and MA theses;
  • Teaching in Dutch in due course;
  • Supervision of PhD research;
  • Acquisition of research funding from outside sources;
  • Representation of the field to external audiences and media;
  • Active participation in the running of the institution.

Selection criteria

  • PhD degree in philosophy;
  • Specialization in any area of Continental Philosophy;
  • Research and publication record commensurate with career stage;
  • Teaching competencies in areas of Continental Philosophy that complement our existing expertise, e.g. Continental Political Philosophy and/or Aesthetics. Willingness to teach philosophical skills may be considered an advantage;
  • Teaching experience and commitment to high-quality teaching practice;
  • Excellent command of English;
  • If the successful applicant does not speak Dutch, s/he will be required to acquire proficiency in Dutch to level B1 within two years of taking up the appointment. The Institute will assist both financially and by teaching relief to make this possible. The candidate must demonstrate sufficient progress toward attaining this level of Dutch acquisition by the time of the probationary review.
  • Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications, the successful applicant is required to obtain a nationally standardized teaching skills certificate (BKO); the candidate must demonstrate sufficient progress toward the attainment of the BKO by the time of probationary review.
  • Openness to other philosophical traditions and to interdisciplinary cooperation;
  • Team player, but also able to carry out independent research and teaching;
  • Flexible, enterprising, and enthusiastic.

Our Faculty/Institute

The Faculty of Humanities is rich in expertise in fields including philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics, and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. With a staff of around 1,000, the faculty provides 25 BA and 27 MA programmes for over 7,000 students.

The Institute of Philosophy conducts research and offers teaching in the standard areas of philosophy in both analytic and Continental traditions, as well as in practical philosophy, comparative philosophy and ancient and medieval philosophy. With around 35 employees and 600 students, the institute offers an innovative, collegial, and international working environment. For more information, see the website. 

Terms and conditions

We offer a 0.6fte, fixed-term post for the period of 18 months from 1 August 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter with the possibility of a permanent contract conditional on performance and funding. It is the Institute's intention to increase the size of the appointment provided performancae and funding allow for it. Salary range, depending on training and experience, is from € 3408 to €  5211 (pay scale 10 to 11 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) before tax per month, based on a full-time appointment.
