Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh

We are seeking an academic leader to embrace the strategic responsibilities of leading the University’s only postgraduate academic and research institute. The role offers development of leadership, management and research opportunities for the individual and the chance to support further growth of an experienced team of academic and research staff.

The Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) leads and manages the team of academic teaching and research staff and drives forward the research agenda in this world-leading centre. You will report to the Dean of the School of Health Sciences and be a member of the School Executive Board and the University Senate.

The role

As the Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development you will provide strategic leadership and direction that promotes multi-disciplinary postgraduate education addressing contemporary health and development challenges in low and middle income countries. You will engage with all complementary aspects of the School and look to foster a blended learning portfolio, with domestic and international partners.

You will lead research growth for the Institute and further promote our research agenda, and through our concordat strategy support the development of young researchers. IGHD plays a significant role in shaping the research culture of Queen Margaret University, with the university’s REF2021 submission documenting a strong track-record of funding, publications and policy impact in the relevant unit of assessment. IGHD regularly holds major research funding from sources including UKRI, NIHR, FCDO, AMIF, NIH and enjoys enduring relationships with policy and practice partners such as the WHO, World Bank, the Red Cross movement, UK Home Office and Scottish Government.

About you

You will be an accomplished academic with a successful record of achievement within the broad field of the Institute for Global Health and Development with demonstrable experience in management, learning, and in research leadership. You will be a strong motivator and influencer with a proven track-record in research development and grant generation.

You are a respected and trusted leader who will use your experience and understanding of higher education to provide leadership on institutional research and learning enhancement activities and to represent the University on relevant sectoral bodies.
