This studentship presents a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge smart wearable technologies, to create breakthrough discoveries in future health monitoring, sports and personal electronics. The student will work in a pioneering group on nanogenerators, guided by a prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow (primary supervisor) and a team of world-leading experts and industry partners in the UK, Europe and Asia.

Full Project Detail:
Triboelectric Nanogenerators (TENGs) are at the forefront in creating self-powered wearable electronics – that convert human motion into electricity to power smart textiles and health sensing applications (e.g.: movement, vital sign monitoring). Today’s wearable TENGs, designed predominantly using plastic sheets, face drawbacks including stability issues, low-efficiency and low-wearability caused by material and design related issues. This project explores a revolutionary new approach to design and fabricate functionalised fibres and textile yarns to develop highly-efficient and wearable TENGs, and investigate their applications in power generation and human movement monitoring (https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/experts/ishara-dharmasena/). The work builds on the pioneering theoretical modelling, device optimisation and material developments activities conducted by our group, and benefits from globally top ranked sports/exercise facilities at Loughborough during the application development phase. The studentship aligns with the RAEng Fellowship project of the primary supervisor, and presents many opportunities for training, skills development and outreach activities. Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering (Electronic/Electrical/Mechanical/Textile), Physical Science (Chemistry/Materials) or a related subject. A relevant Master’s Degree or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: smart textiles, nanotechnology, electrostatic modelling, material fabrication.
