This is an exciting opportunity to join the ambitious and newly formed department of Materials Science and Engineering within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. We are seeking applications for a postdoctoral research assistant position to join the SPARC II team on a one-year fixed term position. SPARC II is a £7’000’000 multi-technology program, with groups working on all aspects of solar energy exploitation. SPARC II is a SO1.1 Operation funded by the Welsh European Funding Office with the beneficiaries comprising of Swansea, Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities. The operation is led by Swansea University. SPARC II will develop new themes in solar PV energy research which will address the big challenges for this. The research will seek added value solutions to these technology challenges that will provide new manufacturing and supply opportunities for Welsh industry.

The Research Assistant will work on the manufacture and materials characterisation of porous silicon photoelectrodes; design and build of photoelectrochemical test cells for measuring performance of porous silicon photoelectrodes; present of the results of this work both internally and externally, including as oral presentation and written reports and peer-reviewed publications; assist in the co-supervision of postgraduate students and other research staff.

Candidates should posses a PhD or equivalent in Physical Sciences or Engineering (in the case of recently completed doctoral students, the doctoral thesis must be submitted before 31/12/21), have evidence of experience of synthesis of photocatalysts and electrode fabrication for solar fuels or photocatalysis applications and experience of materials characterisation techniques such as XPS, XRD, UV-Vis, SEM, and TEM.

We would also expect the successful candidate to show evidence of experience of (photo)electrochemical characterisation techniques such as Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Intensity Modulated Photocurrent Spectroscopy (IMPS) and analysis of photoreaction products using for e.g. HPLC, GC or LCMS.
