Join a major project Civil War Paths – “Understanding Civil War from Pre- to Post-War Stages: A Comparative Approach” funded by a £1.2m UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship awarded to Dr Anastasia Shesterinina. Working as part of a vibrant research team, you will be generating cutting-edge insights on civil war from pre- to post-war stages through fieldwork-intensive qualitative comparison. This work will shape new understandings of the paths civil wars follow and inform policy on this dominant form of armed conflict. To find out more, visit: https://www.civilwarpaths.org/.

You will have an exceptional opportunity to be part of the project while advancing your own research; benefit from mentorship, methods training and career development; and build a strong academic and non academic network. Based at the Centre for the Comparative Study of Civil War established to host the project, you will work with a project team to advance civil war theory; develop a coordinated approach to fieldwork; conduct fieldwork in relevant field site(s), including in-depth interviews; collaborate on analysing data to produce high-quality outputs; and actively contribute to the life of the project and intellectual community around it.

You should have or be nearing the completion of a PhD in Politics, Development Studies, Geography, History, Journalism or another relevant field, preferably on a topic related to civil war, and have substantial expertise and experience of qualitative data collection and analysis, preferably based on indepth interviews, on cases of civil war. You will have excellent organisational skills and ability to adapt to new circumstances and will need to be able to work independently and collaboratively to deliver highquality research outputs.

Due to the multi-region nature of the project, we are seeking candidates with regional expertise and fluency in language(s) necessary for qualitative research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

To apply for the post, please submit a CV and a research proposal, outlining up to two cases of civil war in Sub-Saharan Africa that you would ideally focus on as part of the project and your proposed approach to understanding the case(s) from pre- to post-war stages of conflict (please see the ATJ for further details).
