We have been awarded a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Phase 2 Grand Challenges Explorations award for Male Contraceptive Drug Development. We seeking to recruit an exceptional individual to join us as a Post-Doctoral Scientist within our Reproductive Biology Team to examine the effect of a series of compounds on human sperm function.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team operating at the cutting edge of technologies and systems to developing a new contraceptive for men. You will be regularly interacting with School of Life Sciences - National Phenotypic Screening Centre, and Drug Discovery Unit. You will be able to hone your cell biology skills within a highly collaborative environment, with opportunity available to develop new techniques for assessment.

Based at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, the School provides outstanding opportunities in medical education and training supported by world class research facilities.

Your priorities will include:

  • Performing human sperm function tests.
  • Collaboration with Scientists across the University.
  • Development/modification of new low and high throughput assays/methods to assess impact of compounds on spermatozoa.
  • Assessment of key pathways specifically related to sperm motility.
  • Establish and perform secondary assays to confirm hits and elucidate their mechanism of action.
  • Potential development of in vitro models mimicking the in vivo environment.

Who we’re looking for:

  • PhD in life or biological sciences; or in the final stages of their PhD with considerable experience (previous experience in reproductive biology is not essential).
  • Ability to think around a problem and work to specific deadlines.
  • A track record of involvement in successful collaborative research projects.
  • A strong track record in cell-based research preferably with experience in developing quantitative biochemical or cell biological assays.
  • Knowledge of microscopy (preferably in live-imaging but this is not essential).
  • Fluency in written and spoken English language are essential.

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment would be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 25 - 28 £29,614 - £32,344).
