About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

Diamond houses two centres dedicated to Electron microscopy: the electron Bio-imaging Centre (eBIC) and the electron Physical Sciences Imaging Centre (ePSIC).

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for an Electron Microscopy Scientist or Senior Electron Microscopy Scientist to work within Diamond’s ePSIC.

This is an opportunity to join a team of expert electron microscopists embedded within the wider X-Ray synchrotron community at Diamond. The successful candidate will support the day-to-day operation of the ePSIC instruments, provide technical, scientific and data analysis expertise for external users, develop their own independent research portfolio and contribute to technique development and implementation.

Further duties will include:

  • Managing the general running of the EM labs and auxiliary lab equipment.
  • Providing electrical engineering design support to the technical systems.
  • Developing a research program in a scientific topic in physical sciences with electron microscopy as the primary tool and ideally exploiting the X- ray capabilities.
  • Line managing EM Scientists and team members.
  • Providing a local contact including set up and out of hours support to users of EM at Diamond, providing advice and guidance on experiments, data analysis and research techniques.
  • Assisting in the development of new equipment on the microscope, including testing and commissioning.
  • Disseminating and communicating microscopes capabilities and output through publications and presentations.

About You

You will have an appropriate first degree and post graduate degree or you will demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.

You will be an experienced EM Scientist with experience of transmission electron microscopy data collection and analysis. You will also have experience of project management.

You will demonstrate knowledge in the preparation of samples for transmission electron microscopy, along with the ability to design, plan, organise, and implement projects and tasks within an allotted timeframe.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills with the ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with staff and facility users at all levels.

Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may be available where applicable.
