Modern Legal Records Specialist

The National Archives

Location: London
Salary: £28,040 to £33,000 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 16th November 2021
Closes: 30th November 2021

At The National Archives, we are passionate about using our expert knowledge of our collections to inspire audiences in different ways and make them think differently about archives. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to put modern legal records at the heart of Archives for Everyone – our strategic vision setting ourselves the challenge of becoming the 21st century national archive.

The focus of this role will be the records of civil litigation from c1750 to the present day, with a particular emphasis on the long nineteenth century. This will include the full range of domestic legal records held at The National Archives, including common law, equity, probate and maritime litigation and exhibits, and the records of international courts such as the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and the Mixed Commission Courts.

You will also have to engage with the enormous access challenge posed by the destruction of the indexes to many of the post-1870 records. You will need a good grounding in digital humanities and the way that digital methods can be used to explore, interpret and make easier the use of archival sources. Through deep engagement with these records, you will develop innovative and interdisciplinary research in order promote understanding of and access to legal records held by The National Archives.

As part of the Legal Records team, you will champion these records both internally and externally to academic, legal and public audiences, and engage these audiences with their work. This role will also form a vital link between the work of the Legal records team and that of the Modern and Early Modern records teams.

Your specialist work will be very wide-ranging and include the development of and participation in external funding bids, academic engagement and collaborations, catalogue enhancement work, research and public engagement opportunities, events and exhibition curation, and the development of research guidance using a variety of channels. You will be expected to engage with digital humanities research methods and developments in digital scholarship.

You will also work in our public advisory service, delivering advice on using records from our vast historical holdings onsite and online; you will share your knowledge and expertise internally and externally.

Closing date: Tuesday 30th November 2021 at 11:55pm
