The Health and Lifestyle Research Unit (HAL) is a leading research group focusing on tobacco dependence and its treatments and on weight management interventions. The Research Unit, based in Stepney Green, is already providing a stop smoking service to Tower Hamlets, and Newham. They have now been commissioned by the London Borough of Waltham Forest to also. Waltham Forest has expanded its stop smoking service provision to include hard to reach groups, and has around 34,000 adult smokers, equating to 16% of people aged 18 and over, compared with the average of 12.9% in London, and 13.9% in England.

The Unit wishes to recruit a Stop Smoking Practitioner to provide the day-to-day specialist tobacco cessation support to the residents of Waltham Forest.

The post holder will join a team of comprising Researchers, Stop Smoking Advisors, Clinicians and support staff.

Key duties of the role include;

  • To provide intensive support for smokers and tobacco users using Pharmacotherapies and behavioural support to targeted segments of the population (as stated in the service specification) who have complex needs i.e. COPD, MH/SMI and pregnancy.
  • Maintaining motivation of clients during times of emotional distress. Occasional exposure to distressing/highly distressing circumstances for example: Clients – diagnosis of chronic or terminal illness/disease, clients suffering from mental health problems, clients or clients’ families’ addiction to other drugs/substances.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information to clients in a culturally sensitive manner. To provide a culturally sensitive approach to cessation by sensitivity towards the protected characteristics in accordance with Equalities and Diversity Policies.
  • Maintaining resources for outreach sessions, workshops, presentations and community events in the form of a display board, leaflets posters, CO monitor, NRT samples and paperwork.

Starting salary will be £28,208 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
