About the Role

The Department welcomes applications for a Lecturer in Anthropology starting in 2022. The successful candidate will be an outstanding anthropologist with requisite teaching experience and topical expertise to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules in migration and medical anthropology, ideally with a focus on mental health and wellbeing – broadly defined and understood; as well as in the wider discipline of social/cultural anthropology. Regional specialism is open to any area of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and/or their diasporas. It is expected that you will have expertise relevant to the vision and strategy of SOAS, including a strong interest in issues of particular importance to the developing world.

You must have a PhD in Social/Cultural Anthropology or closely allied field and a record of excellence in anthropological research on migration and/or medical anthropology, ideally with a focus on mental health and wellbeing. This will be evidenced by original fieldwork and publications and/or conference presentations proportionate to career level. We particularly welcome candidates who demonstrate potential to contribute to the development of innovative pedagogies and have experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

About you

Essential

  • A PhD in Social/Cultural Anthropology or closely allied field
  • Demonstrable interest or experience in developing and delivering modules at the university level to the highest standards
  • Broad knowledge of social anthropology, with topical expertise to teach migration, displacement, and mental health/well-being at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Achievement of quality research and outputs, in line with this level of appointment.
  • Awareness of and the ability to accommodate a diversity of identities and protected characteristics in academic environments.
  • Strong interpersonal and time management skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, meet varied deadlines, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
