The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the scientific body of the Federal Republic of Germany that prepares expert reports and opinions on issues related to food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection on the basis of internationally recognized scientific assessment criteria. The institute provides sound scientific advice to federal ministries and agencies responsible for consumer protection and food safety. BfR is also conducting own research on relating topics. BfR is a body under public law within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the Department of Chemical and Product Safety at BfR, unit “Product Analytics”, we are seeking to recruit for a permanent position at the earliest date possible, a

Scientist - head of the consumer products laboratory within the Product Analytics unit (f/m/d)

Part-time employment is possible. 

The remuneration is commensurate with the tasks and qualifications.

Promotion to civil servant will depend on the fulfillment of the requirements under civil service law and complete fulfillment of the qualification profile. Alternatively, the position can also be filled with employees according to TVöD.

Within the unit “Product Analytics“ we develop modern analytical methods to determine substances migrating and emitting from consumer products and food contact materials. Our unit hosts the German National Reference Laboratory for Food Contact Materials. The establishment of a complementing reference laboratory for consumer products is currently being planned.

Specifications:

  • lead the laboratory for consumer products within the unit “Product Analytics”
  • develop modern sensitive and specific analytical methods to assess the migration end emission of substances from consumer products
  • plan, initiate and supervise research projects related to analytical chemistry, with a focus on the assessment of the dermal and inhalative exposure to migrating and emitting substances from consumer products
  • draft scientific publications, presentations, project reports and participate in national and international scientific congresses
  • evaluate and assess measurement results and deliver reports on schedule
  • instruct and supervise laboratory personnel, undergraduate students and PhD students
  • assess scientific studies with regard to the validity of the applied analytical techniques as well as the robustness of analytical data
  • participate in BfR’s commissions and subordinate boards and committees, represent BfR in national and international boards and committees
  • communicate with German ministries on the federal and state level, official control laboratories, consumer protection organizations, industry associations, research partners and media
  • maintain the quality management system of our analytical laboratory according to the requirements of DIN EN ISO 17025 and represent the laboratory as a study director (“Prüfleitung”)

Requirements:

  • Master/Diploma degree (master's degree, diploma or a comparable university degree) in chemistry or a similar field of study, PhD required
  • Ideally several years of experience in analytical chemistry, a scientific stay abroad is a plus
  • extensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the field of instrumental analytics (e.g. GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, LC-HRMS, online-LC-GC-FID, GC×GC-ToF-MS, emission test chambers) as well as with common extraction and sample preparation techniques
  • ability to work as an independent scientist (documented by scientific publications) and willingness to take responsibility and participate in the development of the analytical laboratory for consumer products
  • expertise in chemical analyses of consumer products is desirable
  • knowledge within the fields of toxicology and risk assessment of consumer products is a plus
  • experience with acquiring third party funding is desirable
  • excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and German
  • handling of standard IT applications, conscientious working, flexibility, resilience, ability to work in a team and willingness for work-related travel
