Associate Professor/Professor in Fire and Explosion

London South Bank University

Location: Southwark, London

As part of an on-going programme of investment and development, the School of Engineering, London South Bank University is seeking to appoint a senior (Associate Professor or Professor) member of academic staff to lead the Explosion and Fire research group within the Division of Chemical and Energy Engineering at London South Bank University.

The Explosion and Fire Group (EFRG) was founded in the late 1970s and has been supported through a large number of externally awarded contracts and has a longstanding relationship with Sellafield Ltd (over 25 years). The group has contributed significantly to the Sellafield Hydrogen Technical Guide, the UK’s foremost source of guidance for hydrogen hazard management across the NDA estate (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority). The group has experimental research facilities that are unique to hydrogen safety research in UK universities.

You will have knowledge and experience of evaluation of explosion hazards and modelling of flammable gas phenomena including explosion and dispersion, combined with experimental validation of models. Experience of codes such as FLACS, CFX, and Fluent would be considered very advantageous. You will have a demonstrable track record of securing funding and managing a vibrant research group.

You will share our passion for high quality research and be able to contribute to a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the School of Engineering. You will also supervise MSc and PhD thesis students.

We are particularly interested in recruiting new staff with interest in:

  • Hydrogen safety
  • Modelling of flammable gas dispersion
  • Modelling of gas explosion phenomena
  • Experience of conducting experimental investigations in explosion, fire and flammable gas dispersion phenomena

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching and administrative aspects of the School and maintain an internationally recognised, externally funded interdisciplinary research programme. We are seeking candidates to lead and develop their own current research programme and integrate across existing areas of expertise. About You

You will join our lively  School which is internationally-recognised for its research and teaching. You will have an excellent academic research record, including peer-reviewed publications, be full of creative ideas and willing to work in a team.

You will hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or closely related subject. You should have a demonstrable track record of high-quality research or technology development. Experience and/or qualifications in teaching are a significant advantage. Excellent interpersonal skills will be necessary to liaise with work colleagues and academic partners as well as supervising researchers and students

Salary: Starting from Grade 9 £60,478
