We are currently inviting applications for a PhD in Development Studies funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of the South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership. Interested candidates can find information about our areas of research expertise through consulting the websites of our departments.

Within the Department of International Development, our research applies social science theory and methods to analysing the human and social dimensions of social, political and technological change. Our staff and postgraduate students are currently engaged in research in the UK and over 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, using a wide range of conceptual and methodological frameworks.

Within the Department of Economics, our research covers the economics of health, education and skill formation, institutional economics, political economy, industrial development and agricultural economics. We work closely with major international agencies, from the World Bank to UNIDO. Our economists are also engaged in research projects in developing countries that utilise cross-sectional and longitudinal survey datasets.

Within the Human Geography Research Cluster, our research addresses critical 21st century challenges around diverse communities and their interactions with the environment and explores local-global interconnections. Stakeholder engagement and ‘real world’ relevance is critical to this and so we take a highly interdisciplinary and participatory approach to our work.

Students enrolling onto the Development Pathway at the University of Reading will also be able to engage with the Global Development Research Division, which spans International Development, Economics and Human Geography.

We invite applications from candidates with research interests relevant to these fields of development studies.

Funding Details:

  • Tuition fees, UKRI stipend and application access to funding for training, travel, fieldwork and overseas visits.

See https://senss-dtp.ac.uk/application-faqs/ for full eligibility details, including criteria for Home fee status and eligibility of international candidates. Applications are open to UK, EU and International applicants. ESRC SeNSS funding covers tuition fees at the Home rate and the University of Reading will cover the difference between Home and International fees.

Application Deadline:

The first step in applying for a SeNSS scholarship is to develop a research proposal and find an academic who is interested in supervising your project. As the scholarships are competitive, you will need a strong research idea and a supervisor who is able to work with you to develop a written proposal. You are strongly advised to begin the application process early. You should notify the contact academics below of your intention to apply early on in the process and ensure that they are aware that you have submitted.

Applicants must apply for a place of admission at the University Reading by Friday 14 January 2022 and for SeNSS funding by 12.00 noon on Tuesday 25 January 2022
