The role

The University of Bristol seeks an outstanding candidate for a permanent academic appointment within the Astrophysics theme in the School of Physics at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor, depending on the experience of the appointee. A full job description is available in the Available Documents section, below.

What will you be doing?

This post is on Bristol’s Academic Pathway 1 and involves both research and teaching, the latter at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the School’s degree programmes.

The successful candidate will carry out world-class research which exploits state-of-the-art observing facilities preferably through involvement in, or leadership of, major international astrophysical research collaborations, and/or computational modelling of astrophysical phenomena. They will enhance and broaden the group’s programme of research. This currently focusses on observational studies of galaxy and cluster evolution; the fuelling of AGN and their interaction with the surrounding environment; the evolution of (exo)planetary systems; and with a growing interest in the use of Data Science techniques to maximize the usefulness of large astrophysical data sets. Here we are looking for applicants who can enhance our research in extragalactic astrophysics and/or cosmology.

The University seeks applicants with a strong commitment to all aspects of the academic mission, including research, teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, securing grant funding, outreach and knowledge transfer activities, and academic leadership and coordination.

You should apply if

In terms of research background and experience, we particularly encourage applicants with significant plans to exploit existing, new and near-future world-leading observing facilities including - but not limited to - ALMA, JWST, SKA (and precursors), Rubin Observatory/LSST, Euclid, MOONS, 4MOST, ELT, The Simons Observatory. Applications from excellent candidates with different areas of expertise and interest within the broader extragalactic/cosmology remit are also very welcome.

Applicants should possess a PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or related subject, have a strong publication record and demonstrate scientific influence and/or leadership in international collaborations.

Further details of the Astrophysics theme’s current and future activities can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/research/astrophysics/

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world’s leading universities. Both the School and University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment as set out in our equality, diversity and inclusion web pages. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities, especially from women and other groups currently under-represented in academic posts.

Applications should include a statement of research plans (no more than 2 sides of A4) and a statement of teaching philosophy (no more than 2 sides of A4), in addition to a full resume (curriculum vitae).
