Research Technician

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) - Cell Biology & Biophysics

About the team/job

We are seeking for a highly motivated and excellent research technician to join our team. The Ellenberg group is part of the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit and is a highly international, multidisciplinary team consisting of chemists, biologists, engineers, physicists and computer scientists. Our overall goal is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division and nuclear organisation with cutting-edge imaging technology in single human cells and early mouse embryos. For that purpose, we are developing a broad range of advanced light microscopy technologies to visualize the functions of the involved molecular machinery non-invasively and computationally mine image data to extract biochemical and biophysical parameters.

Your role

You will support pre- and post-doctoral fellows in the group that study the assembly and functions of nuclear pore complexes, as well as the nanoscale organization of the genome during mitosis and interphase. These projects combine state-of-the-art fluorescence labeling of proteins and DNA in CRISPR engineered cell-lines and mouse strains with advanced light- and correlative electron microscopy to measure the functional properties of these biomolecules quantitatively and at single molecule resolution in situ.

You will provide technical support with a high degree of independence, assist with experimental design, cell line generation and maintenance, protocol development and troubleshooting, organise laboratory reagents/databases/material and will be responsible for instruments maintenance.

You have

You have ideally at least 5 years of experience as a research technician/assistant in the field of life sciences or related disciplines after completing your Technician or M.Sc. degree or you ideally have 2 years of experience in the same field after completing your PhD. degree.

Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.

You might also have

Experience with fluorescence/super-resolution microscopy, electron microscopy, image analysis or CRISPR engineering of cell lines is advantageous. Experience with mouse embryo isolation, culture and micromanipulation would also be of interest.

Why join us

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1600 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits. Excellent child care facility is available on campus
