We wish to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in European Union politics and related disciplines.

You will join an expert team of researchers to work on Banking on Europe, a projectfunded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and Luxembourg National Research Foundation.

Led by Professor Dermot Hodson (Birkbeck) and Professor David Howarth (University of Luxembourg), this project explores the evolution and accountability of pan-European public financial institutions from the 1950 Treaty of Paris to COVID-19. It will generate new knowledge of how bodies with the authority to borrow on financial markets to provide grants, loans and guarantees have acquired such a significant role in European governance. It will consider how bodies such as the European Investment Bank, the European Stability Mechanism and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are held to account and how accountability practices in this domain can be strengthened. 

You will contribute to the primary and secondary research for the project and co-author working papers, policy briefs and journal articles. You will help to organise workshops, present research findings at academic conferences and assist with project communication. 

In order to be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Fluency in English and reading proficiency in two of the following four languages: German, French, Italian and Dutch
  • Expertise in European Union / European integration studies
  • Expertise in social science research methods, including qualitative and quantitative methods and knowledge of archival analysis and methods
  • Ability to manage your own research and contribute to project outputs
  • Excellent communication skills

Remuneration:

Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale, which is £39,173 rising to £44,775 per annum. 

The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
