Integrated Care Academy at the University of Suffolk and the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System: Mental Health PhD studentship

Applications are invited for an exciting and innovative three-year, full time PhD studentship aligned to the work of the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System (SNEE ICS) and the Integrated Care Academy (ICA) at the University of Suffolk.

The PhD

It is estimated 90% of people with mental health problems are cared for within primary care. COVID-19 has had a marked effect on people’s mental health, including a four-fold increase in reported symptoms of an anxiety and depressive disorder with younger people and minority groups especially hard hit. This PhD instigates the first steps toward identifying those procedures and practices necessary to deliver an integrated model of community mental health provision. This research will be produced through co-production and structured through asset-based approaches. Through identifying ‘what matters to me’, the research will engage younger adult patients and/or users, unpaid carers, community mental health and primary care clinicians as well as academics to map and detail those contextual factors, barriers and facilitators underpinning seamless integration of community-based mental health care provision across settings.

Aspects of the project are open to change as the candidate moves through the PhD process, planning and conducting research.

The Successful Candidate

You will need to be passionate about exploring what patients, users and/or carers want from community mental-health provision, will identify those services or interventions that are effective in supporting young people to manage their mental health condition and work closely with SNEE ICS to understand those barriers and facilitators to implementing integrated mental health provision for young people.

You will also need a 2.1, or higher, honours degree in a relevant discipline, have a good knowledge of integrated care, community mental health policy, structures, processes and provision as well as understanding of qualitative methods. Whilst not essential, a Masters’ level degree in a related subject would be advantageous. Your prior degree may be in health policy, sociology, psychology, health and social care, health economics or as a clinician (e.g. nursing).

Funding notes

The cost of your PhD fees and a yearly stipend at current UKRI rates will be covered by the Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group. There are also additional monies to support e.g.: conference attendance, transcription, publications and travel. The studentship is open to UK candidates only owing to funding restrictions and will be available from February 2022 for three years (full time study, or pro-rata for part time study).
