Overview

We invite applications from outstanding and highly motivated students for a PhD Studentship in Observational Astrophysics at Newcastle University. The successful applicant will work with Dr David Rosario within the Astronomy and Cosmology group in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics.

This PhD research will use some of the first images and spectroscopy from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to investigate the nature of dusty winds driven by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in nearby galaxies. The student will develop expertise in the processing and analysis of JWST mid-infrared datasets. They will work alongside an international team of astronomers from the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS) to interpret these measurements using multi-wavelength supporting data and modern simulations, with the goal of understanding the impact that AGN-driven dusty outflows have on galaxies.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to get involved in science outreach and communication, with a special emphasis on JWST science and research. We particularly welcome applications from those interested in contributing to a diverse and inclusive culture within our group, School, and University.
