We are seeking a post-doctoral research scientist with a track record in virus and host genomic data analysis to join Dr. Azim Ansari’s group at the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research. Our research focuses on host-pathogen genomics, Genome-Wide Association Studies and Population Genetics of pathogens. We are generating paired host and virus genomic data from large patient cohorts and are investigating the impact of host genetics on virus evolution and the impact of host and virus genetics on clinical outcomes.
The post will build upon previous studies investigating association between host genetics, virus genetics and clinically important criteria, including viral load, treatment response, progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Working with Dr Ansari, you will be centrally involved in the quality control and analysis of next generation sequencing data, host and pathogen genome wide association studies, RNA-Seq and other sequencing studies. Depending on your experience you will take a leading role in analysing virus next generation sequencing (NGS) data, including bioinformatics pipeline development and performing phylogenetics and genomic epidemiological studies to understand the evolution of the pathogen. You will integrate this data with the clinical outcomes to understand the role of the virus sequence diversity in modifying clinical outcomes. You will also integrate host and virus genomic data generated from the same individuals to identify host genes that drive the evolution of the virus. You will be involved in development and implementation of new statistical approaches to look for interaction between genetic markers and these molecular measurements, and associations (possibly nonlinear) with multivariate clinical outcomes.
Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research houses an inter-disciplinary research consortium which investigate pathogens through a combination of experimental, theoretical and computational approaches. Oxford Nuffield Department of Medicine is one of the top five biomedical institutions in the world and is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research.
To be considered, you will hold, or be close to completion of a PhD with strong quantitative element, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, population/statistical genetics, statistical methods development, etc. You will also have experience of large-scale statistical data analysis, developing computational or bioinformatics pipelines or software development, evidence of originating and executing your own academic research ideas and excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in a team.
