‘Religion and the Frontier Challenges’: Junior Research Fellowships Pembroke College, Oxford University

Place of work - Pembroke College, Oxford University, UK

Start date – 1st October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter

Salary – £30,000 per annum

Pembroke College wishes to appoint three Junior Research Fellows to the ‘Religion and Frontier Challenges’ research programme. Junior Research Fellowships are full-time fellowships offered to early career researchers of any nationality and will be appointed with effect from 1st October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter for two years.

‘Religion and the Frontier Challenges’ is an ambitious academic fellowship programme, sitting at the intersection of theology and other academic disciplines. It seeks to enrich discussion of how contemporary religious traditions and ideas might provide/are providing knowledge and leadership in facing the major challenges currently confronting humanity. The programme is informed by theological discourse surrounding major contemporary ‘frontier challenges’, and the need for religion to provide creative intellectual and practical responses to these challenges. The programme will invite applications to pursue research projects that examine responses of contemporary religion to any of the following:

  1. The challenges of human knowledge, including contemporary ideologies and epistemologies (e.g. secularism, liberalism, atheism), or changes in forms of access to or dissemination of knowledge (e.g. new communications, media, or digital technologies).
  2. The challenges of the fight for justice, including struggles against all forms of inequality, discrimination and marginalisation in human societies.
  3. The challenges of the modern sciences, including the new questions and opportunities raised by advances in technological, medical, biological, environmental and other sciences, and the challenges of sustainability.

Applicants should hold a doctorate, or should expect to submit their doctoral thesis by 30 June 2022 at the latest. Applicants should have experience of research at doctoral level or above in theology and religious studies or in any other related discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to propose, plan and manage a high quality programme of original academic research which relates to the wider agenda of the research programme.

Prior to application please read the further particulars which are available at http://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/about-pembroke/vacancies along with the terms and conditions.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 12:00 noon 18th January 2022. Applications should be submitted by email to rasangi.prematilaka@pmb.ox.ac.uk and should include:

  • A letter of application of no more than one side explaining why you wish to be considered for this position;
  • A curriculum vitae setting out details of your higher education, research and any publications to date, indicating the award of any graduate or postgraduate qualifications (Class, GPA etc);
  • A 1,000 words research proposal with details of research and research activities to be conducted over the 2 years duration.
  • Names, positions, postal and email addresses of three academic referees. The referees will only be contacted to request a reference if your application is shortlisted.

Interviews are planned to be held in the week beginning 14th March 2022, and will be held online.

The annual stipend is £30,000. Benefits include a research allowance of £1,545 per annum (at the discretion of the college), a shared office space and all lunches and dinners when the college kitchens are open. They are also entitled to a range of other college benefits.

The College is an equal opportunities employer. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
