Translating Equalities explores the lives of trans* people within the context of education in the United Kingdom. The project will bring together trans*-identified individuals, community-based trans* organisations and educational providers within Britain in a timely in-depth investigation of trans* people’s experiences of in/equalities and the un/learning of identities through their lifecourse. Specifically, the project will explore trans* educational experiences through formal schooling and representations and understandings of trans* in/equalities in formal and extra-curricular educational contexts through a combination of methods, including online surveys, lifecourse interviews and discussion groups and arts and creative praxis.

Despite legislation affirming trans* identities and protecting trans* wellbeing, trans* people experience a high degree of inequality in educational contexts in the UK. Working with trans* people in a range of contexts across the country, the study envisions to scope and analyse representations and experiences of trans* identities in education through the lens of the following question: How do trans* identified students experience education in contemporary Britain?

The research aims to:

1) Engage trans* identified students within institutions and through the communities they traverse, bringing an intersectional perspective to how trans* inclusive education and equalities approaches can be embedded within the curricula.

1) Develop deeper understandings of various forms of inequalities experienced by trans* people through their lifecourse and educational trajectories;

2) Transform knowledge production and dissemination in offering a particularly trans* epistemology to education, translating pedagogies not only for trans* people themselves but also for fellow students and educators who are significant allies in pursuing a gender-diverse experience in learning identity and equality.

In all these, trans* becomes a powerful pedagogical tool not only in unmasking gender inequality in educational practice, but also in exposing social structures and cultural mindsets which can serve to instrumentalise an otherwise transformative aspect of life, such as the school, to limit diversity and prevent inclusion. The narratives that will be gathered from surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions will provide a framework for analysing gender equality in education from a trans* perspective as well as a paradigm of inclusion and diversity that considers trans* experience as a fundamental aspect of living and learning.
