A postdoctoral research position running until 6th September 2022, is available in the laboratory of Dr. Brian Stramer at King’s College London. The project will be carried out in collaboration with members of the Cell Motility and Cytoskeleton Group of the Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics.  This interdisciplinary project aims to investigate the regulation of cell migration and extracellular matrix formation during embryogenesis by exploiting the embryonic dispersal of Drosophila macrophages.  The post holder will use a combination of advanced imaging techniques and Drosophila genetics to test the molecular signals underlying these processes along with their functions during embryonic development. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Life Sciences and have strong experience with Drosophila genetics and the cell biology of the cytoskeleton.

Key responsibilities

  • To co-ordinate and drive a research project investigating the role of macrophage migration and ECM formation during embryogenesis in Drosophila.
  • The candidate will plan and carry out experimental work, devise strategies for further development and advancement of the project, and s/he will be involved in compiling the data, and writing manuscripts.
  • To contribute to the overall scientific endeavour of the research team and to take responsibility for areas of several of the current projects.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be relevant to the role outline.
  • Participate in maintenance of Drosophila stocks

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  1. General knowledge of cell biology and the cytoskeleton
  2. Experimental research methods and project design
  3. Experience with microscopy techniques
  4. Ability to communicate findings verbally and to write scientific reports

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience with Drosophila developmental biology and genetics
  2. Experience with confocal microscopy
  3. General knowledge of developmental biology
