The role

This is a full time Research Associate position based in the Donoghue, Pisani and Williams Labs of the Palaeobiology research group in the Schools of Earth and Biological Sciences, located in the Life Sciences Building. The role is funded through to the end of July 2024 on a project grant from the Templeton Foundation on ‘Chance versus purpose in the evolution of biospheres’. The overall project encompasses reconstructing the evolution of metabolisms, modelling their impact in transforming Earth from a geochemical, to a biogeochemical planet, and using this as a basis for modelling alternative histories of biospheric evolution. Your role within this project will be the practical data mining and assembly for phylogenomic analyses and modelling metabolic evolution.

What will you be doing?

You will be responsible for the dataset assembly and curation, its phylogenetic analysis, as well as inferring the evolutionary assembly of metabolic pathways. In addition to this computational work, you will be responsible for the preparation and delivery of presentations, participate in the preparation of manuscripts describing research outcomes, participation in research group meetings, conference presentations, as well as assisting in project website maintenance, workshop organisation and participation in public outreach activities.

You should apply if

You should have a PhD in comparative genomics or bioinformatics, extensive experience in Bash scripting and genome data mining, and a good academic publication track record relative to your career stage. You should have experience of writing publication quality technical reports, preparing and delivering research quality presentations, excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as well as good organizational ability. Some experience of interpreting microbial metabolism is desirable, but not essential, for this position.
