Lecturer in Marine Geochemistry

University of Bristol

Location: Bristol
Salary: £44,706 to £50,296
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 9th December 2021
Closes: 11th February 2022
Job Ref: ACAD105765

The role

The University of Bristol School of Earth Sciences seeks a Marine Geochemist for a permanent Lectureship (Assistant Professor). We welcome applications spanning the full range of marine geochemistry, from the deep to the surface and coastal regions, and including interactions with the atmosphere, cryosphere and land in the modern and/or the past.

Marine Geochemistry at Bristol has focussed on fundamental processes that shape the evolution of the oceans and its interaction with the near surface environment. We also connect that understanding to policy solutions and public understanding of the marine realm. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with plans to take advantage of the world-class facilities and expertise within the School, including sophisticated isotopic and trace metal techniques to interrogate marine environments. These facilities are run communally between interested investigators and new members of staff are welcome to be involved.

The post is central to the Geochemistry and Marine and Terrestrial Environments Research Groups but could have strong links to our other four (Palaeobiology, Volcanology, Geophysics and Petrology), as well as wider University research initiatives, including the Cabot Institute for the Environment.

We seek applicants who conduct excellent, innovative and agenda-setting research, have the potential to link that research to wider impact, and are enthusiastic about sharing their experience and knowledge with students and society.

The School is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and a collegial and inclusive working environment. Information on our policies and strategy is available on our website, and we strongly encourage applications from all backgrounds especially those historically underrepresented in academia.

Please include a full CV and two-page cover letter that summarises your vision for research (including impact beyond academia), education, and EDI, including how you will contribute to our collegial and inclusive community.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will conduct exciting research that complements and extends the diverse research portfolio of the School. A strong research track record and an ability to obtain external funding are essential. The post holder will also be enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with students and have a strong commitment to both classroom and field teaching. We host four undergraduate BSc and MSci degree programmes in Geology, Geophysics, Environmental Geoscience, and Palaeontology and Evolution; two postgraduate taught MSc programmes; and a vibrant cohort of postgraduate research students. The successful candidate will contribute to these programmes where appropriate.

You should apply if

  • You have a commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusivity in the Earth Sciences.
  • You have a proven track record of research excellence and the potential to procure funding and build a research group.
  • You are ready to teach Earth Science topics, appropriate to your expertise.
  • You have the potential for teaching excellence and a desire to develop pedagogical skills.
  • You have the ability to effectively undertake administrative roles.
  • You have the commitment to collegiality with staff and students.
  • You have the ability to make connections within geochemistry and other fields in and beyond the School.
  • You have the enthusiasm to exploit our outstanding geochemistry facilities.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
