This is a fantastic opportunity for a chemist to join the Analytical Chemistry group. The laboratories have cutting edge instruments and combine analyses with innovation as well as maintain high quality standard (UKAS - accredited to ISO17025:2017).

The focus of the role is on conducting inorganic, organic and stable isotopes analyses in a wide range of environmental samples to assist in the understanding a wide range of environmental questions.

To address the new environmental questions we need novel methodologies and/or approaches. Proactive and innovative individuals will find this post especially rewarding.

Main Responsibilities

  • Preparation and analysis of a wide variety of matrices including water to soils, biota, vegetation among others.

  • Initially the job will involve all aspects of the chemical analysis of environmental samples including of organic compounds using GCMS; GCMS/MS, LCMS/MS, such as old and new POPs, PLFAs, pesticides, PFCs, etc as well as nutrients measurements, determination of physical properties (such as pH, conductivity), moisture content and loss of ignition and the operation of automated techniques: e.g. alkalinity, ion chromatography, automated colorimetry, carbon and nitrogen analyser and an elemental analyser. However, depending on the science needs you are expected to perform other types of chemical measurement.

  • The post holder will also be expected to work within the laboratory’s quality system and ISO 17025.

  • Instruments troubleshooting and maintenance including direct liaison with instrument manufacturers

  • Ability to do method development and validate new instruments

  • General maintenance of equipment and instrumentation

  • Maintaining a good laboratory environment

  • Purchasing of general equipment and reagents

Skills Criteria

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • A degree (2:1) in Environmental Chemistry and/or at ideally 3 years’ experience in an accredited laboratory

  • Proven experience in environmental chemical analyses- namely the methods listed in the job description

  • A proven ability to successfully prepare samples

  • Demonstrates the ability to produce well regarded, high quality and reproducible data

  • Proficiency with LIMS, Excel and instrument specific software packages e.g. Mass Lynx

Skills

  • An aptitude for solving analytical problems, self-motivated and with enthusiasm for the subject

  • A flexible attitude and adaptable

  • Takes a methodical approach to work

  • Able to work independently and manages own time effectively.

  • Takes responsibility for tasks but knows when to seek advice

  • Excellent oral communication skills

  • Scientifically numerate and with good mathematical skills

  • Excellent written communication skills
