UCL Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to be based at Harwell Campus.

Your role will be to develop correlative imaging techniques and control algorithms for additive manufacturing (AM). Using ultra-fast synchrotron X-ray imaging and correlative optical, infrared and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques, you will develop and apply data fusion, feature Engineering, and machine learning for control and optimisation of AM processes at the microstructural level. You will work closely with academic and industrial collaborators, e.g. Rolls-Royce plc,, from the UK’s Hub for Manufacturing using Advanced Powder Processes (www.mapp.ac.uk). The goal will be to develop novel materials, techniques and control algorithms that achieve highly repeatable properties in primarily metal AM components.

The post holder will have a PhD qualification awarded for research and extensive knowledge and expertise in computational methods applied to correlative imaging and process control. Ideally, you would also have experience in additive manufacturing, synchrotron x-ray imaging and image analysis. Your expertise should be at a level appropriate for the conduct of research and publishing new knowledge in leading international research journals. The post-holder will need to show a high level of initiative and an ability to work collaboratively and independently. Applicants should have good team-working skills and a strong command of English. Ideally, you would have a proven track record in control theory, machine learning, correlative imaging, and image processing.
