We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join the dynamic Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and Astrophysics group at the University of Dundee as a Postdoctoral Researcher, to study the long-term evolution of the Sun's global coronal magnetic field. Topics will include setup and analysis of long-term surface flux transport and coronal magnetic field simulations constrained by solar observations. This is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years.

The MHD and Astrophysics group at Dundee consists of six permanent members of staff (Prof G. Hornig, Drs S. Gregory, S. Matsumura, K. Meyer, A. Russell and A. Sicilia Aguilar). This project is funded as part of an STFC Consortium Grant that also includes Prof A. Yeates, Drs C. Prior and P. Wyper at the University of Durham. The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of MHD and will have extensive experience in computational MHD/hydrodynamics and code development. Experience of topological analysis of magnetic fields is desirable. Experience in solar physics and space weather observations would also be beneficial. Applicants must hold a PhD in solar physics, plasma physics or applied mathematics by the start of the project.

The position is available from 1st April 2022.

Your priorities will include:

  • Preparation and analysis of solar observational data.
  • Setup and analysis of numerical surface flux transport (SFT) simulations constrained by solar observational data.
  • Validation and optimization of SFT simulations, based on comparison with observational time series.
  • Analysis of long-term global coronal magnetic field simulations, including:
    • Global integral properties
    • Topological analysis of the coronal magnetic field
    • Estimates of heliospheric and geomagnetic indices through heliospheric modelling
    • Comparison with time series of in-situ and remote observations

Who we’re looking for:

  • A PhD in solar physics, plasma physics or applied mathematics
  • Extensive experience in computational MHD/hydrodynamics and code development
  • A developing track record of publication in high quality academic journals
  • Experience of presentation of research outcomes at national and/or international conferences
  • Proficiency in appropriate software packages and/or programming languages, e.g. Python, IDL
