The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world aimed to explore the secrets of life. EMBL integrates 27 members states and currently employs approx. 1 800 people across its six sites in Heidelberg, Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Hinxton, and Rome. EMBL Heidelberg is the headquarters site located in Heidelberg, Germany, integrating both research groups and core facilities.

Advanced Training is one of the five core missions of EMBL. The External Training team of the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT) is looking for a laboratory technician for its training laboratories and courses. 

Your role

Reporting directly to the External Scientific Courses Programme Lead, you will be part of the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT).

Responsibilities include the organisational and logistic preparation of the training laboratories and equipment for practical training courses spanning various life science disciplines, as well as the organisational supervision and coordination of the training laboratories. You will also support course organisers and trainers during the practical sessions of the actual courses, which may include weekend days. Many of our courses are now held online. In this role, you will also support the delivery of virtual courses on our online platform EMBL eCampus.

Tasks include:

  • Assisting course organisers during the preparatory phase for both wet training laboratories and computer training room.
  • Ensuring daily laboratory operations, such as dispatching equipment and providing consumables.
  • Assisting course organisers in the preparation of virtual/online courses in the Moodle-based learning management platform EMBL eCampus.
  • General support during the courses for on-site practical and computer-based courses, as well as for virtual courses.
  • Organisational coordination of the ATC training laboratories.
  • Maintaining inventories, and organising installation, calibration and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Monitoring the training laboratory budget.
  • Support supplier relationships if needed.
  • Preparing reagents and cell culture for practical courses, providing advice and guidance to laboratory users.
  • Being involved in other EICAT related tasks as needed.
  • All training lab related tasks will be carried out in close collaboration with the other Training Lab Technician and Training Lab Manager. 

You have

You should have an appropriate degree from a university or technical school and significant laboratory experience in molecular biology or a closely related area (BTA/CTA/PTA, or bachelor or masters degree). You should also have sufficient computational skills to support the computer training room set-up and learn supporting the Moodle-based learning management software. As our ideal candidate, you will have effective organisational skills and the ability to handle work in an efficient, independent and timely manner. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and a problem-solving attitude are required. You should be able to adapt techniques from the literature to the lab and should enjoy learning new methods. A broad knowledge of standard molecular biology methods and standard computer skills are required. Fluently spoken English is essential. 

You might also have

Additional experience in data analysis would be a plus. Knowledge of German is beneficial. Experience with learning management systems like Moodle would be beneficial.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed for up to 9 years in total, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
