The Royal College of Art is the UK’s only entirely postgraduate institution of art and design, dedicated to teaching, research and knowledge exchange with industry. The RCA has been ranked the number one university-level institution for art & design, internationally, for the seventh consecutive year according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2021.
In 2016, the RCA embarked upon the most transformational and substantive strategic plan in the institution's 183-year history. In terms of delivery, we are expanding, with a new 16,500 m2 campus designed by Herzog & de Meuron; developing our academic framework, our MA programmes, and introducing new academic disciplines; designing flexible delivery models and blended learning, and innovating new areas of study from our research.
As the world's leading university level institution for postgraduate art and design education and research, the RCA is uniquely placed to lead the development of new, innovative and research-led postgraduate programmes that address learners' and industry's needs, translate new knowledge from our research into credit-bearing content more rapidly, and support depth of subject specialism alongside new and agile interdisciplinary opportunities. These ambitions are made possible by the size and critical mass of the postgraduate and research community, the wide range of disciplines and expertise within the RCA portfolio, and the development of a new, innovative, academic framework to support and enable the academic vision.
The new academic framework has been in development since 2015, and will launch formally in 2022, with a portfolio of 180-credit specialist Masters degrees, offering deep subject learning, alongside the opportunity for interdisciplinary and thematic cross-College and cross-School units and electives. The framework will enable more rapid curriculum development, translation of insight and discovery from research and innovation into taught units of study, and the development of a suite of professionally orientated programmes that refresh the RCA's Royal Charter mandate and historic links with industry, and connect the College's beginnings during the first industrial revolution with the developments of the fourth.
To maximise the opportunities and development of the College's academic portfolio of taught programmes, and to ensure the readiness of the academic framework to deliver this innovative and exciting new vision, the RCA is seeking to appoint to five newly created Assistant Dean (Education) posts. The Assistant Dean (Education) will work closely with Deans and Directors, the Academic Development Office, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and the Head of Portfolio and Framework Development to realise the College's plans for academic delivery, and the highest quality student experience.
Candidates will be research active, experienced senior academics, fully conversant with curriculum innovation and delivery, assessment design and operation, quality assurance and enhancement protocols and frameworks, and possess a track record of improving student experience and satisfaction. Ideally the candidates will possess a demonstrable record of achievement in one or more of the disciplines of applied arts, architecture, communication, design, education, fine art, and/or humanities, and expressions of interest from candidates meeting the role requirements, from broader and cognate disciplinary fields, are welcomed.
