The School of Arts & Social Sciences is an internationally excellent centre of research and learning on the human condition in all its dimensions. It is a large and vibrant School with around 4,200 students and over 270 staff in seven Departments: Economics, English, International Politics, Journalism, Music, Sociology and Psychology. The School aims to attract outstanding members of academic staff who will produce world-leading and internationally excellent research of benefit to society; provide innovative and exciting programmes of study; and enrich the lives and enhance the career prospects of its students.
The Department of Economics is a dynamic centre for research and undergraduate and postgraduate education. The Department has core research strengths in microeconomic theory, experimental and behavioural economics, development economics, financial economics and econometrics, health economics and macroeconomics. It has hosted several academic conferences in recent years and runs an internal and an external research seminar series. The Department delivers a growing PhD programme, alongside its highly successful BSc and MSc programmes and is part of the South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnerships funded by the ESR.
We are now seeking a new Head of Department to build on the investment in the department in recent years, and to enable this growing unit to continue to realise its potential in education and research. We are seeking to employ a senior, experienced leader and respected academic, with a track record of change management and delivering positive outcomes over a range of indicators. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We assume that the appointment will be at professorial level but will consider applicants at Reader level with successful leadership experience.
As Head of Department you will be the academic and strategic lead with responsibility for day-to-day management, change management, supporting and mentoring staff. You will have a track record of first-rate research and be able to evidence success in leading and delivering excellence in teaching and learning. You will be responsible for the oversight of the student experience and for developing and maintaining a portfolio of programmes with national and international appeal. You will have responsibility for enhancing the research performance and external profile of the department, sourcing income generating opportunities and leading research and external engagement activity, with a clear focus on a successful result in the next REF exercise.
The role will be attractive to candidates with experience of leading transformative change in an academic environment, who have the capacity to inspire their team with a common purpose, bring strong relational skills and an exceptional record of research or teaching and leadership.
As a member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team, you will support the Dean in driving the School’s financial and academic performance, and contribute to the new President’s refresh of the institutional strategy.

The appointment will be for a 3-year fixed period. At the end of the 3-year HoD role, you would move to your substantive academic role.
